Library Journal Review

The former director of Stanford's International Map Centre in London, Whitfield currently owns a company that publishes facsimiles of historical maps; recently, he published a survey history of maritime charts, The Charting of the Oceans: Ten Centuries of Maritime Maps (LJ 2/1/97). Here he has gone a step further by tracing a Eurocentric view of discovery and exploration through the centuries as reflected in contemporary maps. The author admits that this is a "highly compressed account," but the text is primarily a complement to the 150 fascinating maps, 100 reproduced in color, most of which are from the collections of the British Library. The survey, beginning with "Exploration in the Ancient World," features such chapters as "The Lure of the East," "The New World," and "The Continents Explored" and concludes with "Exploration in the Modern World," which covers satellite and space-probe mapping of Earth and other planets. Recommended for all public and academic libraries.ÄEdward K. Werner, St. Lucie Cty. Lib. Sys., Ft. Pierce, FL (c) Copyright 2010. Library Journals LLC, a wholly owned subsidiary of Media Source, Inc.
